I’m wearing green tomorrow. Are you?

By Vicky Barker, CWLC News, Gender Discrimination, June 18th, 2009

Right now, millions of Iranians are risking everything to rise up and demand a real democracy, one where their votes are counted fairly. Once again the world is reminded that regardless of gender, race, religion or nationality — the yearning for self-determination is universal.

After the towers came down on 911, I remember the candlelight vigils and moments of silence all over the world, ordinary people in far away places stopping in solidarity to share our grief with us. Green is the color they are wearing in Iran to demand democracy. Wear green with them.

The Buying and Selling of Human Beings for Sex and Labor

By cacilia, Violence Against Women, June 17th, 2009

The State Department’s annual report on human trafficking (“Trafficking in Persons Report”) found that the current economic crisis has increased the worldwide trade in human beings — including young children — for sex and labor. The report, released this week, estimates that at least 12.3 million adults and children are victims of forced sex and labor every single year. This number is almost certainly too low as most victims live and work out of sight — in the outskirts of society and humanity. More than half of all victims are women and girls.

In today’s Washington Post, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, wrote about the devastating effects of trafficking and of her experiences holding “12-year-olds who had been trafficked and were dying of AIDS.” To many of…

Judge Sotomayor Isn’t Mean

By sarah, Gender Discrimination, June 15th, 2009

Kudos to Nina Totenberg for her fantastic NPR piece this morning taking on the sexist criticisms of Judge Sotomayor’s questioning style. We’ve all heard the reports that Judge Sotomayor is a bully, aggressive, or intimidating on the bench. In her piece, “Is Sonia Sotomayor Mean?,” Totenberg compares the style and frequency of Sotomayor’s questions in recent arguments with those of her male colleagues. Not only were Sotomayor’s questions comparable to those posed by her male colleagues on the Second Circuit, but her questions were not any tougher than those heard at the Supreme Court.

An American hero

By Vicky Barker, CWLC News, Reproductive Justice, Women's Health, June 11th, 2009

It’s been 20 years since that one student stood in Tianamen square facing down tanks and the full military might of the Chinese government. All in the name of democracy. Today Dr. Leroy Carhart announced that he will take over for the murdered Dr. George Tiller and perform late term abortions in Kansas, undoubtedly saving women’s lives. He is also fighting for democracy. By standing up for the rule of law – not the barrel of a gun -  Dr. Carhart is fighting the war on terror on American soil. Let’s not leave him standing here alone.

California’s Budget Crisis

By cacilia, Economic Justice, June 10th, 2009

As we all know, California is in the midst of a veritable budget meltdown. Governor Schwarzenegger is right – painful cuts in programs and services must be made. And, as usual, the brunt of this pain will no doubt be felt most keenly by the poor, elderly and disabled. However, funding for basic safety net services — such as those that feed hungry children and keep families intact and off the streets — must be the last to go, even if it means we must raid the governor’s $4.5 billion rainy-day fund to do so. For the poorest Californians, it’s been raining. Cutting basic safety net services is so very, very wrong, not only for obvious humanitarian reasons (including the fact that we lead the nation…

Dr. George Tiller’s Clinic

By helenann, Reproductive Justice, Women's Health, June 9th, 2009

Today Dr. Tiller’s family announced that they were permanently closing the clinic he ran in Kansas that helped secure reproductive justice for untold number of women.   It’s heartbreaking that his murderer seems to have achieved his goal.   And it seems that the murderer’s “success” has barely received any coverage.  Where is the outrage?

Dr. George Tiller

By sarah, CWLC News, Reproductive Justice, Women's Health, June 1st, 2009

Yesterday, Dr. George Tiller was tragically assassinated at his church in Kansas.  Like any murder, the hypocritical killing of Dr. Tiller was a betrayal of the democratic process and the rule of law.

Dr. Tiller was a great ally of women’s health.  For decades, he provided abortions for women who needed them, including those facing devastating problems late in their pregnancies. Dr. Tiller was unwavering in his commitment to his practice through numerous threats, violent attacks, and litigation.

As we reflect on Dr. Tiller and his work, we are grateful for those doctors who are steadfast in their commitment to reproductive justice.  Among these, is Dr. LeRoy Carhart, who has been an abortion provider in Nebraska for more than twenty years. CWLC awarded Dr. Carhart a Pursuit…
