By CWLC, CWLC News, Domestic Violence, Violence Against Women, Women's Health, May 6th, 2010

s-GEORGE-HUGUELY-VIRGINIA-LACROSSE-YEARDLEY-LOVE-large“George Huguely has been officially charged with the murder of 22-year-old University of Virginia student Yeardley Love. Love was killed early Monday morning. The Daily Progress reported Huguely admitted to police that, during an argument with Yeardley Love, he “shook Love and her head repeatedly hit the wall,” according to an affidavit requesting a search warrant.

It was reported that Love was found face down on her pillow in her bedroom. Her right eye was swollen shut, there was a pool of blood on the pillow, and her face was bruised, according to the affidavits. The door to the room had been forced open and had a hole in it, according to the documents. The two had dated for over a year and recently split.

American Idol meets World Feminism

By CWLC, CWLC News, Domestic Violence, Gender Discrimination, Violence Against Women, April 1st, 2010

It’s now a rare event where a television franchise such as American Idol inspires the courage to question and challenge cultural ‘norms’.  We thought it was important to bring you this great article from today’s New York Post.

Bravery of Arab TV ‘Idol’

Veiled poetess hits ‘vicious, barbaric clerics’

By LUKAS I. ALPERT

A burqa-clad contestant on the Arabic version of “American Idol” landed in the finals after bravely blasting hard-line Muslim clerics on live television, sparking outrage among religious conservatives in the Middle East. Unlike the wildly popular Fox show, contestants in the Middle Eastern version recite traditional and original poetry rather than sing.

While most regale the audience with odes to the beauty of Bedouin life and glory of their rulers, Hissa Hilal stunned audiences last week…

Harry Reid and Domestic Violence

By CWLC, CWLC News, Domestic Violence, February 23rd, 2010

Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid argued for passing a $15 billion job stimulus because ‘violence against women has gotten out of hand.’  Reid’s comments, as noted in by Tracy Clark-Flory in Salon.com continued “Why? Men don’t have jobs. Women don’t have jobs either, but women aren’t abusive, most of the time.” He continued, “Men, when they’re out of work, tend to become abusive.”

Reid is correct, CWLC work and research, a  2004 report funded by the Department of Justice. and experience tells us that there is, unfortunately, a positive relationship between male unemployment and domestic violence against women. Is a jobs bill for men the answer? Especially a $15 billion program that, according to economists, is weak at best?

Here’s an idea – how about funding domestic violence programs…

Charlie Sheen’s Free Pass

By CWLC, CWLC News, Domestic Violence, January 5th, 2010

On 12/29/09, Linda Stasi, columnist at the New York Post (www.nypost.com) commented on Charlie Sheen’s continuing to profit from ‘bad behavior’.  Below are excerpts from the column. What are your thoughts?

——————

Nothing says “holiday joy” like jail for TV’s most famous men.

Late Thanksgiving night, the highest-paid (not to mention the randiest) man in all of sports got into a domestic dispute with his wife, crashed his car, got clubbed by said wife (literally) and ended up snoring on the side of the road before being hauled away, ruining Thanksgiving and the lives of his wife and Tiger cubs, not to mention his career.

On Christmas morning, the highest-paid (even randier) actor on TV wrecked Christmas for his (legally drunk) wife Brooke Mueller and their twins by attacking said…

Legalizing Rape

By Katie Buckland, Domestic Violence, April 17th, 2009

Just when we think that the world has hit a new low, the democratically elected government of Afghanistan has passed the “Afghan Shiite Personal Status Law”, which mandates that a wife have sex with her husband at least every 4 days and can only leave her home with his permission, except in certain specified emergencies.
Stunning.
