National Girls & Women in Sports Day – February 3

By bobbie wasserman, CWLC News, February 3rd, 2010

The National Girls & Women In Sports Day (NGWSD) is a day for girls and women to celebrate their participation in sports and athletics. When Title IX was enacted in 1971, one in 27 girls in high school participated in athletics. Today, one in three girls participate in high school athletics.

The positive influence of sports extends beyond the field.
High school girls who participate in team sports are less likely to drop out of school, smoke, drink, or become pregnant, and are more likely to go to college. The skills gained from sports participation, including teamwork, leadership, and discipline, are crucial as women progress in the corporate world at higher levels than ever before. Eighty percent of female managers of Fortune 500 companies have played organized sports on some level.

Barriers remain
Yet, Title IX violations continue to plague women’s sports programs at numerous levels; from grade school through the university systems. Facilities, maintenance, uniforms, coaching quality, publicity and equal fundraising access are just some of the violations that are routinely reported.
