Dating Violence is an Epidemic
By CWLC, CWLC News, Domestic Violence, Violence Against Women, Women's Health, May 6th, 2010
“George Huguely has been officially charged with the murder of 22-year-old University of Virginia student Yeardley Love. Love was killed early Monday morning. The Daily Progress reported Huguely admitted to police that, during an argument with Yeardley Love, he “shook Love and her head repeatedly hit the wall,” according to an affidavit requesting a search warrant.
It was reported that Love was found face down on her pillow in her bedroom. Her right eye was swollen shut, there was a pool of blood on the pillow, and her face was bruised, according to the affidavits. The door to the room had been forced open and had a hole in it, according to the documents. The two had dated for over a year and recently split.
For roughly the…

NEW STUDY: Breast-Feeding Could Save $13 Billion
By CWLC, CWLC News, Women's Health, April 5th, 2010
A new study published in Pediatrics further punctuates the health and economic importance of breast-feeding – if 90 percent of U.S. women breast-fed their babies for the first six months of life nearly 900 babies would be saved each year, along with an estimated $13 billion in lost potential lifetime wages.
The Findings suggest that breast-feeding may help prevent illnesses such as stomach viruses, ear infections, asthma, juvenile diabetes, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and even childhood leukemia. The Washington Post quotes Dr. Melissa Bartick, an internist and instructor at Harvard medical School as stating that the magnitude of health benefits linked to breast-feeding is vastly underappreciated and that breast-feeding is really a public health issue.
According to the Study, about 43 percent of U.S. mothers do some breast -feeding…

BREAKING NEWS – Judge In New York Dismisses Human Gene Patent
By CWLC, CWLC News, Women's Health, March 30th, 2010NEW YORK (Reuters) – Two human genes associated with breast and ovarian cancers cannot be patented because they are a product of nature, a federal judge ruled on Monday.
The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups sued in May to invalidate a patent on two genes held by Myriad Genetics on grounds those patents stifled the free flow of information and hampered research.
Mutations on those genes are responsible for most cases of hereditary breast and ovarian cancers.
“Because the claimed isolated DNA is not markedly different from native DNA as it exists in nature, it constitutes unpatentable subject matter,” U.S. District Judge Robert Sweet said in a 152-page written ruling.
“Similarly, because the claimed comparisons of DNA sequences are abstract mental processes, they also constitute unpatentable subject…

An American hero
By Vicky Barker, CWLC News, Reproductive Justice, Women's Health, June 11th, 2009It’s been 20 years since that one student stood in Tianamen square facing down tanks and the full military might of the Chinese government. All in the name of democracy. Today Dr. Leroy Carhart announced that he will take over for the murdered Dr. George Tiller and perform late term abortions in Kansas, undoubtedly saving women’s lives. He is also fighting for democracy. By standing up for the rule of law – not the barrel of a gun - Dr. Carhart is fighting the war on terror on American soil. Let’s not leave him standing here alone.

Dr. George Tiller’s Clinic
By helenann, Reproductive Justice, Women's Health, June 9th, 2009Today Dr. Tiller’s family announced that they were permanently closing the clinic he ran in Kansas that helped secure reproductive justice for untold number of women. It’s heartbreaking that his murderer seems to have achieved his goal. And it seems that the murderer’s “success” has barely received any coverage. Where is the outrage?

Dr. George Tiller
By sarah, CWLC News, Reproductive Justice, Women's Health, June 1st, 2009Yesterday, Dr. George Tiller was tragically assassinated at his church in Kansas. Like any murder, the hypocritical killing of Dr. Tiller was a betrayal of the democratic process and the rule of law.
Dr. Tiller was a great ally of women’s health. For decades, he provided abortions for women who needed them, including those facing devastating problems late in their pregnancies. Dr. Tiller was unwavering in his commitment to his practice through numerous threats, violent attacks, and litigation.
As we reflect on Dr. Tiller and his work, we are grateful for those doctors who are steadfast in their commitment to reproductive justice. Among these, is Dr. LeRoy Carhart, who has been an abortion provider in Nebraska for more than twenty years. CWLC awarded Dr. Carhart a Pursuit…
