Yesterday, Dr. George Tiller was tragically assassinated at his church in Kansas.  Like any murder, the hypocritical killing of Dr. Tiller was a betrayal of the democratic process and the rule of law.

Dr. Tiller was a great ally of women’s health.  For decades, he provided abortions for women who needed them, including those facing devastating problems late in their pregnancies. Dr. Tiller was unwavering in his commitment to his practice through numerous threats, violent attacks, and litigation.

As we reflect on Dr. Tiller and his work, we are grateful for those doctors who are steadfast in their commitment to reproductive justice.  Among these, is Dr. LeRoy Carhart, who has been an abortion provider in Nebraska for more than twenty years. CWLC awarded Dr. Carhart a Pursuit of Justice Award in 2007. Like Dr. Tiller, Dr. Carhart has been a target of anti-choice violence. Despite devastating arson, evil threats, and challenging litigations, Dr. Carhart continues to provide abortions to women in Nebraska.

In the wake of Dr. Tiller’s death, we advocate strongly for increased security and support for the medical staffs that are still bravely and legally performing abortions.
