Internship/Externship Opportunities:

Harry A. Blackmun Memorial 

Public Interest Grant  

The California Women’s Law Center is now accepting applications for the Harry A. Blackmun Memorial Public Interest Grant for the Summer of 2008.  The grant was established by Wayne S. Flick and William D. Hynes to commemorate the work of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun, a true champion of people of color, the poor and women’s rights..  Roe v. Wade, which established a woman’s constitutional right to have an abortion, is among his most notable opinions.   

The grant continues Justice Blackmun’s tradition of protecting individual rights by cultivating future advocates, mentors and leaders dedicated to advocating for and securing the civil rights of women and girls.   The grantee’s responsibilities will include legal research, analysis and writing; developing and implementing advocacy efforts; and client interviewing for brief service, counsel, and referral. 

To qualifly, applicants must have:

  • Completed the first or second year at an ABA-accredited law school.       
  • A strong, demonstrated commitment to public interest work and, in particular, to legal and policy issues affecting the civil rights of women and girls.
  • Strong research, writing, and legal problem solving skills, excellent communication skills, ability to work independently, take direction and follow through on assignments.  

A complete application must include all of the following items: 

  • Resume
  • Personal Statement        
  • Essay
  • Two written Personal Recommendations  

The grantee will be required to work full-time, under the supervision of the Legal Director, for 10 weeks.  All application materials, including recommendations, must be submitted together in one envelope.  Incomplete applications will not be considered. For complete details on the Blackmun Memorial Grant, including essay questions, see the offical application. Deadline for submitting all application materials is MARCH 1, 2008.

 

Fellowship Opportunities:

2008 Nina C. Leibman Fellowship

The California Women’s Law Center is now accepting applications for the 2008 Nina C. Leibman Fellowship. Applicants for the fellowship must present a proposal for 10-week research project in any of the following areas:

 

-representation of women/ girls in various media;

-representation of gender roles in various media; or

-treatment of women in either the creative or media side of media employment.

 

Projects can focus on a single medium (i.e. television) or compare two or more media. Projects must include the development of concrete advocacy strategies which can be implemented by the Fellow over the Summer and/ or can be continued by CWLC following the Fellowship.
