The California Women’s Law Center supports Senate Bill 999, introduced by State Senator Fran Pavley, which would require all health care service plans and health insurers to cover up to 12 months of FDA-approved, self-administered hormonal contraceptives when dispensed at one time.
Currently, women can receive a 30- or 90-day supply of contraceptives. But low income women and women who live in rural areas often do not have convenient access to pharmacies or transportation. The 30- and 90- day supply limits require women to spend the time and effort to continually refill their contraceptive prescriptions.
