Today, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that Title VII of the United States Civil Rights Act protects the rights of LGBTQ+ people. Employers may not terminate employees on the basis of sexuality, gender or gender expression.
This is a monumental decision that refutes the Trump administration’s assertion that Title VII, which protects people from discrimination based on sex, did not extend to sexual orientation or gender identity. Justice Neil Gorsuch authored the court’s 6-3 opinion, siding with Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s four liberal judges.
CWLC is proud to have submitted an amicus brief on this case in support of the legal rights of LGBTQ+ workers, making today’s decision a particularly welcome result this LGBTQ pride month.
