Assembly Bill 830: An Act to Amend the Civil Code Related to Gender Violence

The California Women’s Law Center (CWLC) supports California Assembly Bill 830 authored by Assemblymember Susan Talamantes Eggman.

AB 830 would amend Civil Code § 52.4 to specifically define the term “gender” to include a person’s “gender identity” and “gender expression.” This proposal would also explicitly provide statutory protection against violence that is motivated by a victim’s sexual orientation.

AB 830 would also harmonize the definition of “gender” with those found in other statutes, such as the Unruh Civil Rights Act (Civil Code § 51(e)).

AB 830 WAS INTRODUCED 2/26/15

STATUS: APPROVED BY THE GOVERNOR 8/13/15
