Senate Bill 579: the Family Engagement Act

The California Women’s Law Center (CWLC) supports California Senate Bill 579 authored by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson.

SB 579 would give working parents more flexibility in using time off to care for their children and select their children’s educational settings.

Existing law accommodates certain challenges faced by working parents, including providing parents with 40 hours of unpaid leave to care for an ill child, though there remains gaps in job-protected leave. This measure allows working parents to fulfill their parental obligations without fear of losing their job.
