Senate Bill 1015 (Leyva) – Domestic Worker Labor Protections

The California Women’s Law Center supports SB 1015, introduced by State Senator Connie Leyva, which would make permanent the protections given to domestic workers under AB 241. Currently, California law allows for domestic workers, including housekeepers, nannies, and caregivers, to receive basic labor protections through January 2017. SB 1015 would ensure that those labor protections do not expire for these domestic workers.

In California there are 300,000 domestic workers. They do work of the utmost importance, yet before AB 241 was passed, they received wages below the poverty level and were denied basic labor protections. AB 241 offered rights to daily and weekly overtime for domestic workers. This protection allows domestic workers to earn a living wage and honors their hard work. Domestic workers are invaluable for their assistance in the homes of many California families.
