Today is Native Women’s Equal Pay Day, which marks the number of additional days in 2018 that Native women on average must work to make what their white male counterparts earned in 2017. In California, Native women 

working year-round and full-time are typically paid only 57 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men, which means these women must work a significant portion of the year to make up the wage disparity.

Over the course of a 40-year career, Native women lose on average nearly $1 million because of the wage gap. A Native woman would have to work decades past retirement age, until she is nearly 90 years old, to make up these lifetime wage losses.

The gender wage gap is one of the most pressing issues of our time and continues to threaten economic security for all women.

The California Women’s Law Center is dedicated to ending practices contributing to the gender wage gap, which leaves far too many women and their families living in poverty.
